"I have a really clear thought for what I need next year" – Iannone discusses "difficult" decision on his WorldSBK future

‘The Maniac’ has been a hot topic in recent weeks regarding his future and he provided more in-depth comments about what he’s looking for with his next contract

Andrea Iannone's (Team GoEleven) has been discussed a lot in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship in recent weeks, and both ‘The Maniac’ and his current Team Manager, Denis Sacchetti, provided an update with Sacchetti revealing no decision had been made by the #29 while Iannone stated that the situation is not easy, and his decision is “difficult”. His comments came after he finished P5 on Friday at the Cremona Circuit, starting off the Acerbis Italian Round in strong fashion.

In France, Andrea Dosoli, Yamaha Motor Europe Road Racing and R&D Manager, revealed that Iannone was on the list to join the GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team in 2025 even though he’d like to stick with the current line-up. There’s been no announcement about that team’s line-up for next year, nor about Team GoEleven for 2025, but Iannone’s future is still being discussed with there being no news on where he will ride next year.

Speaking during Free Practice 1 when asked about Iannone’s future, Sacchetti said: “This is the question everyone would like an answer to… me too! I still don’t know what our future will be with the line-up. Andrea hasn’t made a decision yet about his future. We’re speaking with him, and we want to keep him free to decide about his future. This weekend, I hope will be a crucial weekend for us and the team. I hope to be able to say something as soon as possible.”

Expanding on whether it’s possible ‘The Maniac’ stays with his current team for 2025, Sacchetti added: “Everything is possible. For now, we focus on the weekend. It’s a home weekend for us, the Italian Round, so we want to get the best result possible and for our fans.”

Iannone was also on hand to provide an update on his future, although the Italian, as always, remained tight-lipped about where he’ll race next year although did open up about what he is looking for as he searches for the best ride possible for him. He stated he needs something where ‘everything is one step more’ than he has now, and revealed he had a clear thought about what he needs.

Speaking about his future, Iannone said: “It’s an interesting question, but I think the situation is not easy. It’s really complicated because I have a really clear thought for what I need next year. I need something more than what I have now. Everything needs to be one step more. We will see, I don’t know. I have something on the table but it’s difficult to decide. I’m not sure if I leave Team GoEleven or stay. It’s difficult to decide. I try for my best outside of the track for making the best for next year. In case I get what I need, I’ll stay in WorldSBK. In case I don’t, maybe I’ll stay at home.”

On the track, Iannone had a strong day on home soil. He finished in P5 after setting a 1’30.016s after moving himself ahead of Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) in the final stages of FP2. The afternoon session was the only representative session on the day after overnight rain left the track damp in the morning, and Iannone took advantage of this to lap just over three tenths slower than pacesetter Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK).

Discussing his Friday, Iannone said: “It wasn’t so bad. We started at a track that I know! The last three or four tracks, I struggled a little bit, because they were all new for me. When I arrive like this without references, it’s a little bit difficult. We started well and the feeling isn’t bad. We need to improve somethings. We struggled a little bit today on the electronics side. In any case, we have a clear idea where we need to improve for tomorrow. It’s not only this thing, but we also need to adjust the bike a little bit at that point, and we try to improve every area a little bit.”
